Summary
Director/Executive in charge of Facilities Management. Facilities Management is an interdisciplinary field primarily devoted to the maintenance and care of commercial or institutional buildings, such as hospitals, hotels, resorts, schools, office complexes, sports arenas or convention centers and the real estate which supports them. Duties may include the care of PEM and HVAC systems; storm-water capture; waste-water reclamation; installation, operation, and maintenance of renewable energy systems; housekeeping and cleaning; renovation, remodeling, and restoration of the built environment as required; design and decoration for periodic, seasonal, and special event change-outs; wayfinding, parking, and transportation; groundskeeping and security. While some or all of these duties can be assisted by computer programs, it is the role of the facility management function (whether it is a separate department or small team) to coordinate and oversee the safe, secure, and environmentally-sound operations and maintenance of these assets in a cost effective manner aimed at long-term preservation of the asset value. In those cases where the operation of the facility directly involves the occupants and/or customers of the owner organization, the satisfactory delivery of facility-related services to these stakeholders will be an important consideration, too; hence, the term "end-user satisfaction" - both a goal and a measure of performance. While these duties can be thought of as non-core or support services, because they are not the primary business (taken in the broadest sense of the word) of the owner organization, they should, nevertheless, assure that the mission and purposes of the owner organization are advanced by Facilities Management in fact and in function. Facilities Management is uniquely positioned to affirm vision, mission, purposes of the owner organization; and, to assure that all aspects of the built environment - as well as all functions by administration and staff - advance the mission and fulfill the vision of the owner organization. In an age when environmental accountability is an emerging giant in our social consciousness, it is often up to facilities management professionals to lead teams of architects, engineers, and construction managers in order to minimize the impact of the built environment on the natural environment for the benefit of citizens, of communities, and of the planet.
